A FORMER Royal Marine from Chorley has set up an online dating agency for British men to meet women from Russia and Ukraine.
Steve Fowler said the service was needed because agencies in the UK were dominated by men.
And he has defended the site, which he claimed offered British men the chance to meet "slimmer" Ukrainian women.
But women's groups were not impressed, with one branding the agency "worrying".
The site, www.romantic adventures.co.uk, contains profiles of more than 3,000 women.
It claims the odds are against men in the UK, saying: "Imagine a place where the situation is reversed, where your choice of friendly, attractive women is almost limitless."
His business arranges dates for men when they arrive in Ukraine or Russia.
The website says it "allows you to meet many ladies, for the purpose of developing that stronger relationship which could lead to marriage."
Mr Fowler, who was born in Chorley and went to college in Blackburn, said: "Every man I speak to is impressed.
"The controversial side of it is if someone's already married.
"We discourage that.
"In my opinion, Ukrainian women are in the same position as British guys.
"And most of the Ukrainian population is quite slim. It sounds sleazy and stereotypical but it's true."
The 41-year-old, who served in the Marines for six years until 1994, also runs a corresponding website where profiles of British men are posted in Russian.
But Alex Bennett, who chairs Blackburn Ladies' Circle, said: "It's worrying because people may not know what they're getting into.
"My main concern is for the women. You have to be cautious."
I SAY (Says Caroline Dutton, Telegraph Columnist). Internet dating has become a common way for people to meet partners. But it's hard to imagin true love blossoming between middle-aged Lancashire men and young Ukrainian women.

I would like to thank Tom Mosely and Ian Singleton from the Lancashire Telegraph for having the courage to write about this subject. The Romantic Adventures website answers many more questions than can be achieved by a small article, and it also addresses many misconceptions. I can also be contacted by phone on 07980 545155 to answer any queries or concerns.
May I assure all women's groups that my services are arguably less worrying than meeting a potential partner in a bar in London or Manchester. I agree all concerned must be cautious, wherever potential couples meet.
Firstly, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office provides travel guidance, and I add my own travel and security knowledge to provide the highest probability of a safe tour and the highest likelihood of successful introductions. For example, most ladies, and men, desire the presence of my staff/interpreters on their first meetings.
Secondly, identification of both parties is requested prior to meetings and men could be requested to get a printout from the Criminal Records Office. The laws of the land, and Legal immigration procedures also provide a great deal of protection for those who want to take the plunge and get married, and fulfil a basic human right: the right to found a family.
With regards to the "I SAY" comment, many UK men and women settle down with older or younger parnters. Romantic Adventures also has young and old men and women.

I already get loads of email spam from russian women wanting husbands. This sort of site is not unusual.

You are almost correct. There are indeed thousands of sites owned by Russians, Ukrainians, and Americans. But where you are wrong, is that it is usually the agencies that send the spam, not the women. Slandering a Nations women is quite sad. My site is unusual, simply because it is genuine, and UK owned. I challenge you to write to 20 ladies on my site, and see how many women say "no thanks" to you! Maybe then you will agree they are not so eager to get married to anyone as you might like to think...

Whats the harm in this site? If people are not involved in a relationship and are looking further a field what buisness it of some femenist womens group. I met my wife on line in a chat room of all places and we are both happy. My wife may not be of Russian or other Eastern decent but a Londoner by birth. I suggest the Chair of Blackburn Ladies Circle (You can be dammned sure if there was a Blackburns Mens Circle the crys of sexism would be heard loud) gets on with out interfearing in matters that dont concern her. Its clear no one is getting ripped off by Steve not like some web sites that appear on the web.
